Garmin echoMAP 50s GPS Review

Fishfinders have made the job easy for people to scout fishes out of deepest of lakes or oceans. There are a lot of brands which manufacture high-end fishfinder and GPS combos these days.

But if someone is on a budget and doesn’t want to compromise on the performance, Garmin Echomap 50S should be the ideal product to consider.

The brand offers a range of perks to a smaller amount. Essentially, this device is good for smaller boats and shorter trips. This article will be discussing some of the features that I found interesting and should benefit you as well.

The Intriguing Design

Garmin echoMAP 50s The Echo Series from Garmin has always been a winner when you consider Fish Finder products. Garmin Echomap 50S rivals all those 12-Inch GPS + Sonar devices with ease.

This device can be used as a Chartplotter as well as a Sonar device, thanks to the tracking technology offered by the makers.

Best thing is, you can save map data thanks to the Dual SD card slots. Garmin EchoMAP 50S is compatible with the bail or flush mount options. Makers have included a transducer as well as WiFi connections for this device.

The Display works Great

Garmin echoMAP 50s GPSThe significant part of the machine is “Display Console”. Images don’t get pixilated, thanks to the VGA display.

It doesn’t look too big in your hands as the traditional 12-inch ones would. The size of the screen monitor is 5 inches. Also, the height is greater than its width making it take up lesser space on the dashboard.

Performance-wise, it has a simple UI. This display gives you clear images even in bright sunlight. You can set a target marker on the screen which will separate your target on-screen from the rest.

How Accurate is the GPS System?

What the GPS and Fishfinder Combos suffer from now days is the adaptability to newer versions of the technology. But Garmin Echomap 50S is updated with the latest release of GPS and GLONASS receiver software.

Garmin EchoMAP 50S does well to refresh the GPS data 10 times per second to provide the users more dynamic view of the route.

I love the fact that Garmin offers the option to use LakeVu™ feature with 5000 maps not the BlueChart G2 version with this device. The former is especially useful when someone is fishing in coastal regions.

Upgraded Sonar System!

Sonar system for Garmin Echo MAP 50S works well with the handheld GPS feature. The HD monitors deliver top notch imagery of the underwater scans. If you are using one of the 5000 HD maps, the sonar return then coordinates well with the position of your boat in the location.

As a result, you will get most comprehensive and updated underwater imagery possible. The synchronization of GPS and sonar is so perfect that you’ll find fishing hotspots instantly when fishing in a big lake.

Transducer and WiFi Connectivity are Perfect Additions

The tducer Garmin 50S rans features operate at 77/200 KHz and has the 500W capacity. It mounts perfectly on a Transcom. It aids the SONAR to return feeds from greater depths.

The display also has the feature that cleans the glitches on-screen. Fishes show up as “Straight Lines” (sometimes as arches if they are moving). Transducer streams the data across compatible devices.

This transducer provides “Dual Beam” signals that can be transferred through WiFi to your mobiles or smartphones. You can stream your feeds using Garmin Mobile app as well.

Pros

  • Simplistic design makes the device easily usable.
  • Accurate GPS system adapts to feeds from GLONASS as well.
  • 5-Inch VGA delivers clear images.
  • The device is pretty small and mounts on bail mounts, flush mounts or a Transcom
  • HD-ID SONAR is an upgrade from the traditional SONAR mechanisms used in other devices.

Cons

  • It is not suitable for FLA fishing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Does the device come with “Purchasable Map Data”?

A: Yes, it does. If you want to have more than 5000 maps installed on the machine, you can purchase additional maps to use via the “MicroSD USB Slot”.

Final Verdict

Garmin EchoMAP 50S serves as an update to the GPSMAP 441S.Not only that, it has a far better SONAR system than any other fish finder of the EchoMAP series. The device takes up less space in kayak’s dashboard.

The SONAR utilizes HD-ID technology which gives me better feeds than devices I’ve used thus far. Plus, it is the cheaper alternative than the bigger GPS devices and offers the same benefits.
