Things to Consider

The use of kayak fish finders has become common in the fishing world and many fishermen benefit a lot from using these devices. The main problem that arises is getting the right fish finder that will work well. This is why we have come up with this guideline to help you figure out some of the important things that you need to look at when you are selecting the best kayak fish finder.

Power

When you are out fishing, you need a great fish finder that will help you see the reading on the display. This cannot be achieved if your kayak fish finder has less power. The higher the wattage of a fish finder, the faster the unit is able to display the readings.

On the other hand, if the fish finder has a low wattage e.g. 100 watt will display slowly, and this unit is best suited for shallow water fishing.

Screen Resolution

The screen resolution is measured by pixels. It is important to go for a screen with a greater number of pixels because it will help you see more details. If you are looking forward to a clear display, it is important to consider the screen resolution as well as the size of the screen. Your screen resolution should not be less than 240(v) x 160(h) pixels. You can also go for a higher resolution screen with a maximum of 640 x 640 pixels.

Transducers

Transducers are important element of the best fish finder that emits and sends sonar waves and sends the sonar signals to the water. In most cases, majority of fish finders come with transform mount transducers out of the box, which are very easy to install. Additionally, the cone angle is an important consideration. If the cone has a wide degree, the more area will be covered.

For anglers who are using in-hull or thru-hull transducers, it is great to go for plastic housing for metal hulls and fiberglass. Stainless steel housings are ideal for aluminum and steel hulls while bronze are best for wood and fiberglass hulls.

Cone Angle

Transducer cones are available in angles ranging from 9-60 degrees. If you get 20 degrees cone, this is an excellent selection for an angler who fish in different water depths. It is important to note that you can cover a large area if you have a cone with a wider degree. Contrary, as the angle gets wider, the sensitivity will start to lessen as you go in deep waters.

Frequency

The frequencies available for kayak fish finders can either be dual, single or multiple. Dual frequency transducers come with both 20 and 60 degrees cones. Many transducers come with 50, 83, 192 and 200 kHz. If you are fishing on shallow water, you need higher frequencies such as 192 and 200 kHz. Lower frequencies will work best on deep water.

Mounting Space

The next thing that you need to find out is the available mounting space on your kayak. Your kayak should have enough space to hold a small 12Vbattery, cables rods and a screen large enough to display the details. You can choose a 5-inch screen if you have a large kayak but for those with small kayaks 3.5-4-inch screen size will be ideal.

Final Verdict

As you can see, the best fish finders given above differ in their manufacturer, features, and functions, however they all have one thing in common; they are all top quality kayak fish finders. Going out on your angling kayak is no longer a long and arduous process, and with any of the kayak fish finders given above you can now increase your fish yield tenfold.

Say goodbye to the old way of fishing, and embrace the technology you see above. You will not be disappointed the next time you set out on your fishing adventure. Good luck as you head out on the water with your kayak or pontoon boats and new fish finder, and feel free to tell me about how your experience was.

Last year I purchased a Humminbird 120 Fishing Buddy. It has a 34 degree sonar cone that looks straight down and a side finding cone of 10 degrees.
