The Morey Mach 7 is easily one of the most recognizable boards on the beach and for a good reason. The Mach 7 is a solid board with a PE core that offers durability and a smooth ride for almost any rider. The channeled bottom and slick skin let this board effortlessly across the water to let you ride the waves.
The crescent tail makes the board more stable, while still giving enough control of the board to give experienced riders a fun ride on almost any waves.
For added strength and durability Morey has included a power rod stringer that will keep the board from flexing and breaking, so you can subject this ride to some tough abuse without having to replace it season after season.
What we liked
- Reliable ride
- Suitable for beginner to intermediate riders
- Good for almost any water
- Durable and long-lasting build
What we didn't like
- Doesn't have an included leash
Morey's Big Kahuna board channels the spirit of the 1950's God of Surf movies to provide a solid ride to larger riders. The 44-inch length and dual composite carbon stringer give this bodyboard the buoyancy and backbone to support riders, like me, who are taller than 6-feet and push 200 pounds across the waves.
The core of this board uses medium density closed cell polyethylene that lends it its strength and increased durability. Plus, the materials make this board ride as easily in the cold Northern California waters as it will in the warm waves off the Florida coast.
The gentle crescent shape of the tail on this board helps riders position and keep their hips centered on the board. This shape gives you a longer ride and more board control as you ride the crest of a wave to beach glory.
What we liked
- Smooth ride
- Excellent choice for larger bodied riders
- The build will last multiple seasons
What we didn't like
- You have to install the leash yourself
The BPS Storm is the first entry on my list for beginner level boards. This board is one of the best boards for picking up for the family since it is at a budget price but will still give you’re the durability and performance you want.
The EPS foam core makes the Storm float well enough to hold up borders of up to about 185 pounds, based on board length.
You can pick up a Storm in 33, 37, and 41-inch lengths that will let you get the best board for every member of the family. For beginning boarders, the board will even come with instructions to help you learn the basic of use and care of the board to make sure you get the most out of this board for years to come.
For seasoned riders, the board package comes with fin straps that let you carry a set of fins out to catch the bigger waves and a longer ride.
What we liked
- High-quality build
- Good board for beginners
- Still offers fun to intermediate boarders
What we didn't like
- Sun exposure can damage skin and layering
The print on the face of the Wave Weapon says it all "own the wave." This beginner level EPS foam board is a fantastic way to start your bodyboarding lifestyle. The Wave Weapon has a curved crescent tail and bottom rear channels that help keep the board moving forward while remaining stable. The channels let you attack waves with abandon as they force water more rapidly out the rear of the board and give you more speed as you slide into shore.
The Wave Weapon comes with a leash and fin straps the will allow you to take your game to the next level and give you a little more speed and power as you paddle to catch a wave. The 33-41-inch length options let you get the perfect size for your height and weight.
You also have three color options so everyone in the family will get their favorite. I have to admit that I like the vibrant pink color. I'm not usually the pink type, but this pink looks good.
What we liked
- Excellent bodyboard for adults and kids
- Polypropylene bottom coating adds speed and performance
- The durable build will last years
What we didn't like
- EPS foam will bend easier on large waves than other materials
The Boogie Board is the closest thing to the cheapies you will see at beachside stores, but this board has a better and more durable build than you will find on the styrofoam board. This bodyboard is made from high-density EPS foam that will make is more rigid and resistant to breaking than the styrofoam boards.
While this board won't have the performance of some of the other boards on this list, its budget price and size make it almost perfect for the kids as they take off for a week of riding the waves on summer vacation. As long as they don't jump on them or try or tackle giant waves, the Boogie Board will last for several fun summer trips to the beach.
What we liked
- Perfect size and weight for kids
- Good budget price to introduce your youngsters to the awesomeness of bodyboarding
- Decent build quality and durability
What we didn't like
- Fabric cover bubbles when wet (doesn't impact performance)
- Not suitable for adults
Younger's line of boards offers a shadow of performance boards at a budget level. The bodyboards are made from EPS foam that makes them an excellent choice for beginners. What sets the Younger brand apart from other beginner boards is the shape and skin.
Younger builds their boards with a skin of IXPE foam, which is a higher density type of closed cell foam that creates a more rigid and durable structure to the board than other foam coatings. The effect is like a turtle shell, it isn't invulnerable but willdo a great job of protecting the shape and functionality of the EPS core. This shell is applied using heat lamination that adds impact resistance for those bigger, more robust waves.
Along the bottom is a high-density polyethylene coating that creates a smooth surface for the water to glide across. The back end is crescent shaped with channels to provide comfort, stability, and speed.
Even though this model is 41-inches, Younger makes the same board in different sizes to match different riders.
What we liked
- Excellent choice for beginners
- Good budget board for intermediate riders
- Strong and durable build
What we didn't like
- Included leash breaks easily
Don't let the "Toy" name turn you away from this great little EPS foam bodyboard. Bo-Toys has manufactured a quality board that has the features and durability needed for someone who wants to buy a board that they won't have to replace after just one vacation.
The EPS foam core offers the same floatation and reliability that you would expect from other boards, and Bo-Toys uses heat lamination to form a stronger and more rigid body that will resist bending and breaking. The bottom is coated with an HDPE skin to produce a super slick surface that won't create resistance in the water.
This board comes in 33 and 41-inch sizes that are perfect for both kids and adults. Plus, you have three color patterns that will give the whole gang a unique board. I like the red and white design the best.
What we liked
- Built last for multiple vacations
- Options available for both kids and adults
- Great beginner board
- Will still offer fun for intermediate riders
What we didn't like
- Colored topcoat scratches easily
The first of the two CBC boards on my list is an excellent option for beginners and smaller riders. The Switch board is available in 33 and 39-inch long boards that work well for riders that are a maximum of 125-pounds.
The core of the Switch is EPS foam with XPE top coating and HDPE bottom skin. These three combine to form a stable and fun board that will have your beginning boarder squealing with glee as she catches her first wave and rides it all the way to the shore.
The included wrist leash will make sure that when they fall off at the end of the ride, the wave doesn't carry the board back out with the water.
What we liked
- Strong build quality
- Great board for kids and smaller beginners
- Holds shape well against severe use and abuse
What we didn't like
- Top skin is slippery when wet
- Board loses buoyancy through water absorption (not enough to discourage riding)
The CBC MMAG bodyboard is the upgraded version of the Switch that offers a larger board with higher performance. The thing that makes this board more unique is the molded arm and hand drips that help keep your arms and hands right where they need to be as you ride the waves.
The result is more control over the board to allow you to pull off some turns as you rip through the waves. Even though the board is an EPS foam core, it is still a good option for intermediate riders that want a board that will give more movement in the water and more speed across the wave.
What we liked
- Excellent board for larger riders
- Comes with included coil leash for comfort and security
- Offers higher performance than similar boards
What we didn't like
- Highly susceptible to sun damage
- Too large for smaller riders
Rider Size and Board Size
The length and the width of the body board is one of the top considerations when choosing a bodyboard. The dimensions of the board will determine how well the board will support you in the water. According to the board experts at the Bodyboard-Depot, "Both height and weight will make a difference to your performance. Even half an inch the wrong way can affect your ability to catch waves and make maneuvers a major challenge."
When selecting your board, make sure that you are getting a ride that will let you catch the waves and glide across the water. The rule of thumb is, the taller and heavier you are, the longer and broader you want the board to be. Smaller borders can use a larger board to help them float, but make sure that the board isn't too big for them to carry.
